Open House is unique in that you see great architecture and design at first hand. Whether it’s a renewed look at your own neighbourhood, or exploration of a new area, our open buildings and expert-led tours will affect how you feel about your city and the way we live.
Private homes
With 100 private homes and residential buildings showcased, Open House is your opportunity to get an insiders’ view of great domestic design and tips – whether they are contemporary award-winners such as Brick House or In-Between, vintage 50s & 60s designs such as The Cedars Span House and Foggo’s St Mary’s Road house, or ecohomes. There’s also lots of interesting housing to compare from post-war social housing such as Spa Green Estate, Alexandra Road, Trellick & Balfron Towers to new mixed-tenure solutions such as the huge regeneration project underway at Woodberry Park; whilst the ‘I was here – changing face of housing’ events take a creative view on the Haggerston Estate in its final hours before it undergoes massive change.
Towers and views
Of course Open House is all about contrasts in type, scale and period – and this year we’ve yet more exclusives on iconic towers offering incredible views: 30 St Mary Axe (aka the Gherkin), Heron Tower and Tower 42.
International architecture with British Council
This year, we also show the value of good architecture to communities both at home and internationally, and help celebrate the final weekend of the British Council’s International Architecture and Design Showcase 2012 with several embassies open and a Symposium of Flanders architecture.
